My Thoughts: Through his own experience, Wally Armstrong encourages readers to get a clear picture of not just who Jesus is but what does he look like to them. Without knowing it many of us have carried around misconstrued mental images of Christ. And it is from those misconstrued images that many of us approach and serve God through a performance based relationship rather than seeing Jesus as a friend. Although the author shares his method for engaging in a more dynamic relationship with Jesus, he doesn’t attempt to offer readers a one size fit all strategy but shows them what is possible. It’s a small but an enlightening book.
Book Description: Do you want to experience Jesus as real? When we look at Jesus’ life on earth, we see Him calling people to simply know Him. He made no demand on them to believe theological propositions. “Follow me” was the invitation which they accepted. They got to know and communicate with the real person. There is a big difference between believing something is true and experiencing it as real. This is the story of how Wally Armstrong learned to communicate with the real person of Jesus in his everyday life. Armstrong experiences Jesus up close and personal and introduces readers to the same experience. In a conversational manner, he explores what it is like to have a relationship with Jesus as if He is sitting right there next to us. He keeps an empty chair ready and imagines Jesus sitting beside him as they talk.

This sounds like a very interesting book, Wanda. I was in Target over the weekend and witnessed a grown man having an absolute meltdown as he complained to the cashier that he could not find “the baby Jesus” at Walmart. I was a bit saddened by the scene, as I felt he was disappointed and distressed with life and looking for some solace in “the baby Jesus.” If our understanding and thoughts toward our Lord does not grow up, neither will our relationship; and we need the comforting friendship of this relationship more than anything.

I couldn’t help but chuckle about the meltdown in search of baby Jesus. I think far too many of us are searching for baby Jesus rather than a risen Lord. Any time a book causes me to pause and reexamine myself, it’s one I enjoy.

I’m doing a lot better now that I’m home again. Had to go away for meetings but there’s no place like home of course. We have gotten a bit of chill here.
