When you find yourself reading slower as you near the final few pages of a book and disappointed to find that all those extra pages left are actually not more of the story, you just know that you’ve enjoyed that book. And that’s exactly where I found myself as I turned the last page of Valerie J. Lewis Coleman’s book, The Forbidden Secrets of the Goody Box.
My Review
Although The Forbidden Secrets of the Goody Box is a work of fiction, readers are bound to see resemblances of their former or present selves or other women they know. The main character, Debra Hampton, is in her mid-thirties and still chasing the elusive dream of finding her Mr. Right. However, the over thirty and still single sister is not the only one experiencing relationships woes. For many singles, Rachel has everything they want—husband, kids, nice home and a great career. Yet even with the whole package, everything is not as good as it seems.
Dispersed within the interesting dialogue of three friends are relational nuggets dispensed by Doc Reed-the relationship guru. Although this is a fast-paced entertaining read, this book will not just leave you entertained but informed and thinking about your own approach to relationships. I love the way the author melting the art of storytelling with the quest to deliver practical insight.
I didn’t like the big cliff hanger the book ended on but I suppose that’s the author’s way of leaving readers hungry for more to come in the sequel to the book, which is scheduled to be released in 2014.
About the Book:
What you father didn’t tell you and your mother didn’t know.
Successful. Beautiful. Intelligent. Yet a satisfying relationship eludes Debra Hampton. At thirty-five years old, she can’t figure out why her philosophy on men—and what they want from women—isn’t working. She’s trapped in a cycle of shattered relationships, until a friend refers her to a relationship guru. After some resistance, Debra finds refuge in his counsel as he helps her navigate through the storms of rejection and failed love. Once he reveals the error of her ways, will Debra master the forbidden secrets to attract her soul mate or continue to keep love at bay?
