Open to Discovery

By Wanda

Columbus day has me thinking of the word discovery.  Some days I find myself wanting to set sail and do as the words of the Cheers theme song said — go somewhere where nobody knows my name.  It’s usually at those times that I find myself weary of the routines of life or overwhelmed with my present circumstances.

At those monotonous times, running away to some distant land sounds like an enticing albeit illogical idea.

Yet it is at those times I can benefit the most from having fresh eyes to see all that is around me.

Marcel Proust quote on discovery | The Watered Soul

Even in our familiar lives there are new things yet to be discovered. Can you perceive them?

Well, Wanda, with those few lines, you’ve preached a month’s worth of sermons. I think sometimes we forget that GOD REVEALS. I’ve been praying, “Lord, let me see, even in the present dark circumstances, what You need me to see.” As I read through 1 Kings 8 recently, part of King Solomon’s amazing prayer got my attention: “O Lord, You have said that You would live in think cloud of darkness.” Our human nature does not get the God, who is light, being present when our lives are clouded with darkness. Circumstances that look gory to us are often exactly where God’s glory meets us. If we live long enough, and take time to reflect, we all can look back at some time when we were shrouded in darkness and now acknowledge that we made it through only because The Light (whether we saw Him or not) was present. Lord, may we see You.

That’s so true LaVonne. There is a light that illuminates from within that can lead us in and through the most darkest of circumstances. Being in the dark can be quite uncomfortable for us humans but if we are in tuned enough even there he reveals himself and often we see more of him there than we do we are experiencing those lit moments of life.

Wanda, just a couple of nights ago, I pulled into my driveway and sat for probably 20 minutes, planning my escape to a destination unknown. It’s a good thing I’m not too keen on traveling to faraway places at night alone, because I had my credit card ready to book a hotel…somewhere. Of course, reality kicked in. Next time, and I’m sure there will be a next time, I will remember to view the world around me with “new eyes”.
Thanks for the encouraging post. 🙂

Oh girl, it can be soooo tempting at times. Some times a chance in pace is just what the doctor order. Other times it’s nothing more than our feeble attempts at escaping and refusing to deal with our realities.

If we keep our literal eyes open, and the eyes of our hearts, we can see new things all the time – for God is ready, willing, and able to reveal more of Himself if we are seeking after Him!

    GOD BLESS!

I just need to mindful to be fully present so that I can see those things He is revealing.

I have always seen this truth when it comes to scripture–a verse or passage I have read dozens of times suddenly has new meaning for me. I am finding that as one season of my life passes to another, I see different blessings–some in places I didn’t think held blessings. Surprising, in a good way. Many blessings, my friend. It always does me good to read your posts.

Isn’t that one of the good things about scripture? It’s alive and fresh. No matter how many times we read, there is always more nuggets to uncover.

Hi Wanda! Oh, I really agree with the Proust quote. I am trying to do that in my life, and then write about it. God is trying to get my attention in all things, I just miss them because of my own busyness. I pray that we will both gain new insight and new faith with our sharpened eyesight.

    Have a good day!

I’m in agreement with that prayer Ceil. I miss so many things because I tend to zone out. But I want to be more aware and present in the moment.

Hi Betsy, that’s the beauty of each day we are given. It presents new opportunities for discovery. Being in a bit of rut myself, I really appreciated your practical tips for getting more from my Bible reading.
